Helping Employees Stay at Work and Healthy
Welcome! Thanks for exploring our stay-at-work services. Our goal for stay-at-work support is to get involved as quickly as possible. We offer help before a condition becomes disabling enough to require a disability claim. This can help keep employees healthy and on the job receiving a full paycheck.
The key is Workplace PossibilitiesSM1. This unique program takes a proactive approach to both stay-at-work and return-to-work services.
How It Works
Employees who require accommodation to remain at work will face no direct cost, as long as they're covered under the group policy and eligible for benefits. Their employers will also have no direct costs. That's because our Reasonable Accommodation Expense Benefit covers stay-at-work services.2
This benefit is available to members covered by our Long Term Disability insurance. Employers can find a description of the Reasonable Accommodation Expense Benefit, including provisions and limitations, in the LTD policy.
Here's an example
An employee is being treated for symptoms linked to carpal tunnel syndrome.
Before symptoms worsen, we get involved. Our on-site consultant assesses the employee’s workspace and makes recommendations for accommodations.
For carpal tunnel symptoms, our consultant might suggest a different keyboard, mouse or wrist rest. We then provide that equipment at no extra cost.*
*This example is for illustrative purposes only. Accommodations may vary based on your individual circumstances, policy, exclusions and limitations. They must also relate to limitations that result from an employee’s medical.condition. In the example above, that would be carpal tunnel syndrome. If the same employee asked for an accommodation unrelated to carpal tunnel symptoms, such as a sit/stand desk or new chair, we wouldn’t provide that equipment.
Deciding If Stay-at-Work Services Can Help
For employees
If you think you need stay-at-work support, share this content with your managers or HR department.
For employers
To determine if an employee is a good fit for stay-at-work services, consider these two requirements:
- The employee must be covered under our Short or Long Term Disability insurance.
- The employee must be receiving treatment for a medical condition but have not yet filed a disability claim. If they’ve filed a claim and are on leave for their disability, we would provide return-to-work support.
Employers who think an employee qualifies for stay-at-work services can access the following documents:
- Download our Stay-at-Work referral form (or in NY only).
Send this to us to request services. If you’re unsure whether your employee needs stay-at-work support, go ahead and refer. Our team will investigate and determine whether your employee requires our services. Download our Stay-at-Work Medical Information Request (or in NY only).
Please provide this form to your employee to fill out. Your employee will give the form to a medical provider to complete and fax to us.
If your policy defines a physician as an M.D. or D.O., your employee’s medical provider will need those credentials. If your employee is not treated by an M.D. or O.D., they'll need a referral to an appropriate physician.
- Download our Authorization to Obtain and Release Health Information form (or in NY only).
Please have your employee fill out and sign this form. The employee will then email us the form.
