Special BIR Rules for Medical Residents and Fellows

Effective immediately, residents and fellows can apply for an accelerated benefit increase during the 12 months after they complete their training. That’s an increase from six months to 12, doubling the BIR special accelerated option for medical residents and fellows. They can apply for an increase up to I&P limits with proof of income or up to new-in-practice limits without income documentation.

Residents and fellows can also apply for an accelerated benefit increase before they complete their training if they have a signed employment contract in place. In this case, the application date must be within six months of starting employment.
