Since 1974, we have protected Oregon’s unique land use planning program, using the tools in the 19 statewide land use goals to promote livability in every city and town and help working farms, forests, ranches and vast natural areas thrive.
What We Do
1000 Friends of Oregon serves the public interest as a watchdog for the government agencies tasked with managing land use issues, operating independently of partisan politics. We work with Oregonians to enhance our quality of life by building livable urban and rural communities, protecting family farms and forests, and conserving natural areas. Our smart statewide land use system has guided us for nearly 50 years. It’s why things look and feel different here, and what 1000 Friends was founded to uphold. No other nonprofit does what we do.

Oregon’s unique land use planning program represents more than legislation – it’s a way of life. We experience it at local farmer’s markets, in vibrant main streets, in beautiful natural areas that offer us adventure, and when the CSA delivery comes right to the doorstep. But Oregon’s magic formula cannot be taken for granted. So, we’re here to partner, collaborate, research, advocate, and support all Oregonians in strengthening our land use planning program. We know that when we take care of our land use planning program, it takes care of all of us. I hope you’ll join us.
