Chess for Success provides after-school chess instruction for Oregon and SW Washington children. Our focus is on children from communities of color and low-income families.
What We Do
Chess for Success provides free chess clubs in high-poverty schools. Students receive two hours per week of chess instruction and practice from October to March. Chess for Success puts on a series of tournaments from January through March. Each region has a tournament and students must win the tournament to qualify for the State Tournament in Portland. Chess for Success sponsors the Vangie Shaw Girls Play Chess Memorial Tournament and the City of Portland Tournament. The current pandemic will require our program to be virtual at this time.

Learning chess gives kids a powerful tool for critical thinking, planning and patience. It is a lifetime skill that can bring generations together and has few to no barriers. It's also fun! Chess for Success has been bringing after-school chess clubs to Oregon and Washington schoolchildren, with a focus on those with economic and racial barriers.
