Metropolitan Youth Symphony, a leader in music education for nearly 50 years, is one of the nation’s largest youth orchestra programs. In a typical year, MYS serves 500+ students in 14 orchestra, band, strings, flute, percussion and jazz ensembles.
What We Do
MYS typically serves 500+ students from 130 schools in 14 orchestral, band, flute, percussion and jazz ensembles. MYS programs develop the whole musician through theory classes, small group instrumental coaching with musicians from the Oregon Symphony, chamber music, and collaborations with performers across artistic disciplines. Access is foundational: MYS offers free string lessons for underserved children, tuition assistance, loaner instruments and free concerts at Title 1 schools that reach over 5,000 children each season.

We inspire kids to excellence in music, while at the same time celebrating all of their other passions to enrich their creativity and their lives. It’s an integral and healthy approach to excellence. As an educator, you want to have high standards and clear expectations for students, but my colleagues and I are asking ourselves constantly: ‘What good is any of this if it’s creating more stress and grief than creating joy and fun?’ Through our programming, we plan to continue leading the way in having conversations important to young people and to celebrate music.
